How can Acupuncture help you?

When you visit Martin Matthews for the first time a detailed analysis of your condition will be undertaken to reveal the underlying cause of the problem. This is done using pulse and tongue examination. This assessment will then be considered alongside various lifestyle factors such as work and leisure activities to enable a full diagnosis and suitable treatment plan to be determined for you. He will combine his skills in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine and to discover the cause of your problem, which will then be fully explained to you.

A treatment plan will be suggested which may include acupuncture and osteopathy combined or alone. You will always have the absolute choice over which type of treatment you receive. Treatment will last around 40 minutes, sometimes more, or less, depending on the nature of the problem.

Long Covid?

I am treating an increasing number of patients  suffering the chronic  symptoms of Long Covid.

Symptoms include:

  • extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • shortness of breath.
  • chest pain or tightness.
  • problems with memory and concentration (“brain fog”)
  • difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • heart palpitations.
  • dizziness.
  • pins and needles.

If you are unlucky enough to be suffering from these symptoms, you may find that acupuncture can substantially help in your recovery. An increasing number of studies show that acupuncture is modulating the immune system and in addition, that it has an anti-inflammatory action, particularly useful in cases of patients suffering from symptoms caused by the coronavirus. These studies show that the levels of immune biomarkers, such as T-lymphocytes (CD3+, CD4+), NK cells, interleukins (for example IL8, IL17, IL2, IL 10) and macrophages change in an immune enhancing, overreaction dampening fashion. In other words, the studies have shown clear evidence that acupuncture increases the body’s ability to fight infections, while at the same time calming the body’s occasional but very detrimental tendency to overreact. In addition to these directly measurable markers, scientific studies have shown that acupuncture reduces chronic pain, anxiety, depression and stress. It has been proved that these debilitating states of dis-ease have a clear and detrimental impact on our immune system. It is thus apparent that acupuncture has a very real role to play in the rehabilitation of long covid patients.

By emphasizing balance, acupuncture can also relieve various female-specific symptoms. Martin’s treatment focuses on the need to take healing to a deeper, more long-lasting level. Treatments are intended to educate, as well as treat physical symptoms to improve well being.

Disposable needles are always used so there is absolutely no risk of cross infection.
